in 2005, the Danes had access to something like 40 billion DKK, that is about 5,5 billion Euros. these are the amounts that individuals had, not corporations. there are 5 million Danes.
polarisation is growing. newspeak is exploding. the sale of circular garden barbecues (preferably the ones called "Weber") was a total fab in the cool, Danish summer. the Weber world (this site actually has a concept of "the Weber Nation", spooky. was this intentional??
people talk of interest rates, of mortgages, they nod briefly between the home office and the workplace office, where they sweat and sweat and sweat for goals that they have long gone forgotten. do they really believe the values of their corporation? do they have newspeak for breakfast?
on TV, two of their political leaders fight (they actually do, occasionally) about the ideals of equality and freedom. while noone listens, as this discussion takes place on the lonely channel with no viewers at 23:00; while the people aleep and dream of safety. yesterday, the government support party, The Danish People's Party, a mildly extremist xenophobic party uniting care for "the little man" and protecting "Danishness" from the great threats (does that remind you of anything..?) outside.
yes, yes, it's a beautiful world.
Del Amitri back in 1990:
"Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show
And they’ll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Gentlemen time please, you know we can’t serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there’s nothing to go
And by five o’clock everything’s dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we’ll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Telephone exchanges click while there’s nobody there
The martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we’ll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry young men from manchester write to complain about
All the repeats on t.v.
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While american businessmen snap up van goghs
For the price of a hospital wing
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They’ll burn down the synagogues at six o’clock
And we’ll all go along like before
And we’ll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow.."
And in my TV they talk of Berufsverbot, and they are not talking just about Germany in the 70's.. Do they talk of freedom? Do they know ask themselves if we try to expand freedom? Do we try to expand society, or just the share of the Weber Nation.
Good night, Denmark. Welcome to the "new" millenium. help us, world.
